Today marked the last day of the Hobie 16 World Championships and what a regatta it has been. We have seen all kinds of conditions, challenging the most steadfast sailors and today was no exception.

Race 11

In what was a somewhat challenging day of stops and starts we saw the winds get up and the boats go out on schedule for the first race of the day. The 12 knot northerly dropped off toward the end of the race but not before we saw a result for Cam Owen and Suzzi Ghent.

The West Australians gave it everything they had and lead wire to wire taking victory followed by Jason Hess and Irene Abascal from Guatemala in second and fellow Aussies Stephen Watt and Arbi Watt from New South Wales picking up third.

The drop in wind put a hold on racing but our sailors enthusiasm was not left wanting and they were back on the water at 2:00 for the second race of the day.

Race 12

That enthusiasm was evident as Jason Waterhouse and Lisa Darmanin from New South Wales, Australia threw themselves at the line taking the lead and holding it all the way to 1st! Narrowly beating Jason’s parents Rod and Kerry Waterhouse also from New South Wales who couldn’t be prouder of Jason and Lisa’s victory. Coming in third were Koreans Byeongki Park and Haekwang Youn.

The real shake up of race 12 though was current China, Hobie World Champion Jerome Le Gal’s Black Flag Disqualification (BFD) placing him 57th for the race and ultimately costing him the title and changing the game for the other competitors in the field.

Race 13

Jason Waterhouse and Lisa Darmanin again took the top spot in what was a fantastic days racing for the pair as winds freshened and the boats got to stretch their legs giving the sailors some pressure for the last race of the day. Second and third were picked up by Tim Shuwalow and Nina Curtis from Sweden and Daniel Bjornholt-Christensen and Lachlan White respectively.

Gavin Colby and Josie Mark gave it their all and placed fourth. Unaware of Jerome Le Gal’s BFD the pair unknowingly sealed up the event to ultimately be crowned our New Hobie 16 World Champions!

Congratulations Gavin and Josie on a fantastic regatta! The Celebrations and Congratulations will continue on into the evening as we finish up an amazing 2 weeks and close out what has been biggest Hobie 16 World Championships! Nice work, all involved!

Last night there were both cheers and tears as the fleet was cut and our 56 Hobie 16 World Championship finalists were named. While there were commiserations for some, there wasn’t too much celebrating for our finalists as there was some pretty serious work to do this morning! It’s day one of the finals!

Racing kicked off on schedule with mild temperatures and winds filling in as expected, early in the day. We saw a nor’ easterly of 10–15 knots set the pace in the morning, freshening to 25 knots later in the day.

The top three going in to the finals, Jerome Le Gal and Marco Iazzetta from New Caledonia along with Aussies Cam Owen and Suzzi Ghent and Swedes Tim Shuwalow and Nina Curtis had their work cut out for them today with a total of 5 races to get through it was going to be anything but easy.

Race 6

In the first race of the day we saw Australians, Rod and Kerry Waterhouse from New South Wales, throw themselves at the line, getting a clear lead out of the first weather mark and taking it all the way home. After a change of position early on we saw West Australians, Gavin Colby and Josie Mark take second followed by New Caledonians Enguerrand Thomas and Cyriaque Thomas in third.

Race 7

Races were turned around quickly and an epic battle for first broke out between Australians, Taylor Booth and Chris Barnes, Benjamin Roulant and Leah Bennet, Gavin Colby and Josie Mark and the New Caledonian brothers Enguerrand Thomas and Cyriaque Thomas.

It was ultimately, Australians, Benjamin Roulant and Leah Bennet from New South Wales that took the prize with New Caledonians Enguerrand Thomas Cyriaque Thomas taking second and French team Martin Orion and Hilliard Charlotte moving up from seventh to take third.

Race 8

Boats were again retuned to shore and turned around quickly to see the West Australians Gavin Colby and Josie Mark, tough it out with fellow Aussies Mick Butler and Bradley Wilson from New South Wales and Guatemalan team Jason Hess and Irene Abascal for the top spot. The end result was Jason Hess and Irene Abascal in first, Gavin Colby and Josie Mark second and Mick Butler and Bradley Wilson taking home third.

Race 9

It was Australia, Australia, Australia for the top three spots in Race 9 with West Australians Cam Owen and Suzzi Ghent taking first ahead of Victorians, James Wierzbowski and Pip Pietromonaco in second and New South Wales team Martin Thompson and Bella Zanesco picking up third before the boats were once again returned to shore and sailors headed back out for race 10.

Race 10

It was Australia again for the top spots in race 10. In what was definitely the move of the day, we saw Gavin Colby and Josie Mark have a sensational race, moving up from 8th position at the first weather to take victory at the finish securing themselves the overall lead for the day! Second place went to Cam Owen and Suzzi Ghent while James Wierzbowski and Pip Pietromonaco grabbed third.

With five races down, we will see competitors return to the water tomorrow for a maximum of four races before we name a new Hobie 16 World Champion!

Overall results for all competitors as they stand today can be seen on the results page and the top ten are listed below. See you on the water tomorrow!

Hobie 16 World Championships. Semi Finals Day 3. Who will make the top 56?

With six races completed yesterday, the pressure was anything but off this morning, as today, the last day of the semi-finals, was the day to make it count. Tonight the fleet will be cut to the top 56 competitors all vying for glory in the Hobie 16 World Championships finals starting tomorrow.

With sun and temperatures in the high 20’s plus a nor’easter running 10–20 knots, Jervis Bay couldn’t have done much better by our sailors today. Winds got up by around 9:30 and sailors scrambled to get on the water, all vying for the best spots on the starting line in what was set to be a great day of competition.

Race 4A

In the first race of the day, Tim Shuwalow and Nina Curtis from Sweden were first off the line and looking strong but were overtaken at the weather mark by Jason Waterhouse and Lisa Darmanin from NSW Australia, taking first place. The Swedes held on to second while Denmark took third with Daniel Bjornholt-Christensen and Lachlan White moving up at the weather mark to secure a top three result.

Race 4B

In race 4B, West Australians Gavin Colby and Josie Mark lead wire to wire, securing the top spot with New Caledonians, Jerome Le Gal and Marco Iazzetta chasing them all the way to take second. Third was picked up by consistent top ten placing, French competitors, Martin Orion and Hilliard Charlotte.

Race 5A

Winds freshened to 15–20 knots in the last two flights of the day making for some pretty exciting racing. West Australians with wind in their sails, Cam Owen and Suzzi Ghent came from behind at the first weather mark to lead the charge all the way to the finish. Tim Shuwalow and Nina Curtis from Sweden moved up from fifth at the first weather mark to take second across the line while New Caledonians, Jerome Le Gal and Marco Iazzetta turned on the charm and moved up from tenth to take third!

Race 5B

In the final flight of the day, 15 knots at the gate and Gusts up to 23 knots at the windward mark made for some pretty shifty conditions in race 5B.

Jason Hess and Irene Abascal from Guatemala battled it out with James Wierzbowski and Pip Pietromonaco from Victoria, Australia for the top spot with the Guatemalans ultimately claiming the victory. James Wierzbowski and Pip Pietromonaco took second seeing a return to the top three for the pair while West Australians, Gavin Colby and Josie Mark took third.

Once again, Jervis Bay did not disappoint and with the help of our sailors, delivered yet another sensational days sailing!

Overall results will be announced at this evenings cut party when the final 56 will be revealed. Stay tuned and check the results page to find out who made the cut and who will be back on the water tomorrow in the quest to be crowned World Champion!

Hobie 16® World Championships. Semi Finals Day 2

As we moved into day two of the Hobie® 16 World Championships, anticipation turned to hope and then fear as first impressions of the day’s winds appeared as though a repeat of the yesterday’s still conditions was on the cards. People stayed positive and 112 pairs of crossed fingers seemed to do the trick as the wind filled in and almost on cue, Jervis Bay delivered another sensational days sailing!

Winds began to fill in around 8:30 with sailors scrambling to get themselves prepped and on to the beach as the first boats went out at 9:00 for a 9:30 start. Race officials once again set a downwind (1GO) course that was maintained throughout the day in conditions so good a total of six races were turned around, sailing well into the early evening.

Race 1A

Race 1A saw 56 boats hit the water and French pre qualifiers, Benjamin Roulant and Leah Bennet, launch themselves at the start line, getting out in front and maintaining the lead from go to whoa. Guatemalans Jason Hessand and Irene Abascal battled it out with Trine Bentzen and Nicola Bjornholt from Denmark for next in line succeeding to take second, leaving third for the Danes.

Race 1B

New Caledonians, Jerome Le Gal and Marco Lazzetta were first off the start line but were taken by West Australians Cam Owen and Suzzi Ghent who would go on to win, securing their first victory in the Semi-Finals. The New Caledonians would go on to take third after second was taken by Australians Jerome Binder Deb Muller from New South Wales.

Race 2A

Winds continued to fill in to 10–12 knots and Thai competitors Damrongsak Vongtim and Kitsada regrouped after taking 22nd in race 1 and came back to take victory in race 2A, they were followed closely by Australians Jason Waterhouse and Lisa Darmanine from News South Wales in second and French competitors Martin Orion and Hilliard Charlotte in third.

Race 2B

Race 2B saw Koreans Keunsoo Kim and Minjae Song take advantage of the moderate breeze to fly off the line and lead all the way to the finish. The pair were tailed in second all the way by Tahitians Rousseau Manu and Djenadi Elise with Trine Bentzen and Nicola Bjornholt from Denmark not far behind, picking up third.

Race 3A

56 boats returned to the water to see Jason Waterhouse and Lisa Darmanin (AUS) again in the top three, this time leading wire to wire and taking first, They were followed closely by New Caledonians Thomas Dupont and Lauren Hautier (NC) With fellow Australians and New South Welshmen, Jerome Binder and Deb Muller taking home third.

Race 3B

Late in the day the boats went out one last time to make for the biggest day of the Hobie 16 World Championships so far. After a black flag postponement the racers kicked it into gear with New Caledonians Jerome Le Gal and Marco Iazzetta taking the top spot followed by Martin Orion and Hilliard Charlotte from France and fellow New Caledonians Enguerrand Thomas and Cyriaque Thomas taking out third.

With six races sailed, the splitting of the fleet and the addition of the pre qualified Semi-Finalists we have seen a new set of names arrive in the top ten, whether this is skill or the shifty conditions taking some by surprise we will see. One thing is for sure though, consistency is the key! If you can manage to keep yourself in the top ten, you are most definitely in with a chance to take the crown!

Overall

The overall standings at the end of day two of the semifinals are:

LE GAL, Jerome and IAZZETTA, Marco (NC) with a total of 8 points

OWEN, Cam and GHENT, Suzzi (AUS) on 12 points

ORION, Martin and CHARLOTTE, Hilliard (FRA) on 12 points

The good weather looks set to continue tomorrow with sun and 28ºC and winds expected to freshen to 15–20 knots, in what could hopefully see a repeat of today’s sailing.

Hobie 16 Open Series Qualifiers Day 3. Who will make the cut?

The event arena was charged this Monday the 10th of February with sailors and spectators alike discussing conditions, sharing tips and talking technique as anticipation filled the air. Today was the day that split the fleet! With all competitors getting their five races, today is the day when all the hard work pays off! It's game time!

The day started out with a good 6-10 knot southerly and smooth water on Jervis Bay. Race officials set a downwind (1GO) course and the boats got out early to take advantage of the mornings conditions getting the first two races off in time for lunch.

Race 4A

In the first race of the day we saw Vaughan Price and Will Mckensie from New South Wales throw themselves at the line and lead all the way through the second weather mark. Victorians Campbell Weddell and Antje Leifheit were hot on their tail, eventually stealing the lead in the last leg to secure the number one spot.

Price and Mckenzie picked up second and West Australians, Murray Woodhead and Deanne Marsh took third.

Race 4B

A drop in wind for the second race of the day saw the 1GO course length shortened slightly before racing was resumed as planned.

West Australians, Phil Smyth and Markson Reedy(AUS) will be grinning ear to ear as they led wire to wire to take out first. Victorians, James Wierzbowski and Pip Pietromonaco will also be smiling, taking second and leaving them in good shape after a sensational qualifying series while after a short stint in second, Chris Boag and Alisanne Green from Victoria took third.

Race 5A

Winds remained consistent for the remainder of the day seeing course lengths shortened slightly across the last two races.

Nothing would stop fist place getters James Wierzbowski and Pip Pietromonaco (AUS) taking inspiration from race 4 and smashing it wire to wire in Race 5A to secure the top spot.

Second place went to familiar faces, the New Caledonians, Enguerrand Thomas and Cyriaque Thomas (NC) with Paul Darmanin and Lucy Copeland from New South Wales (AUS) taking out third.

Race 5B

Boats were turned around quickly for the final race of the day seeing Tim Shuwalow and Nina Curtis (SWE), Jerome Binder and Deb Muller from New South Wales (AUS) and Victorians Chris Boag and Alisanne Green (AUS) battle it out for the top spots. It was neck and neck at every marker with the end result coming in as

Jerome Binder and Deb Muller (AUS) in first followed by Chris Boag and Alisanne Green (AUS) in second and Tim Shuwalow and Nina Curtis taking out third.

Anticipation is still riding high as overall results are to be kept under-wraps until the cut party tonight when it will be revealed who is going to continue their quest for the championship crown and who will have to be content with watching.

Check the results page to see who made the cut!

Related content:

Image Gallery - Hobie 16 Open Series Qualifiers Day 3

Results

Category:

Reports

Images():

open_day3_0005_P1130343.jpg

Dont show images on page:

display

Hobie® 16 Open Series Qualifiers Day 1.

With three World Champions crowned yesterday it was time to start afresh with the qualifying rounds of the Hobie® 16 World Championship Open series kicking off today. 188 competitors are vying for a spot in the Semi-Finals where the field will be whittled down to the top 112.

The day got off to a great start with a 10–15 knot nor’easter seeing race officials set the course for a punctual 10:00 am start, splitting the races into two flights to accommodate the number of competitors on the water at any one time.

Race 1A

In the first race of the day it was Australians Jason Waterhouse and Bridget Waterhouse from NSW (AUS) first off the line and through the gate but they were over taken by Enguerrand Thomas and Cyriaque Thomas (NC) at the second mark. Ultimately it was Tim Shuwalow and Nina Curtis (SWE) however who came through and took first at the finish.

Race 1B

In race 1B it was Sebastien Maron and Titouan Galeain (NC) in the lead for the majority of the race before falling back to second at the finish opening the door for James Wierzbowski and Pip Pietromonaco from Victoria (AUS) to take first with Martin Thompson and Bella Zanesco (AUS) coming in third.

Race 2A

53 boats hit the water for race 2A with winds building to 15–20 knots and gusts of up to 24 knots at the windward mark making for some pretty serious sailing.

Shane Peterson from Queensland (AUS) with German crew Lena Gauthier were in first to the Gate when Victorians, James Wierzbowski and Pip Pietromonaco (AUS) challenged for the lead. Peterson and Gauthier fought back and took victory at the line leaving the standings as Shane Peterson and Lena Gauthier (AUS) in first, James Wierzbowski and Pip Pietromonaco (AUS) in second and Taylor Booth and Chris Barnes (AUS) taking third.

With three races under their belts, race officials deemed the rising winds in excess of safety levels and called off racing for the rest of the day. Race 2B will resume tomorrow in what looks set to be another sensational days sailing on Jervis Bay.

Overall, the standings for Day 1 are James Wierzbowski and Pip Pietromonaco (AUS) in first followed by Tim Shuwalow and Nina Curtis (SWE) in second and Jason and Bridget Waterhouse (AUS) in third.

Related content:

Image Gallery - Hobie® Open Class Qualifiers. Coming in second were the New Caledonians, Thomas Enguerrand and Thomas Cyriaque with Paul Darmanin and Lucy Copeland from NSW Australia coming in third.

Hobie Youth Class Race 6

Winds shifted to 18–20 knots just in time for the last race and tested the mettle of our Grand Masters.

Regatta Report of the 2014 Hobie® 16 World Championships.

Today was day two of the Hobie® Grand Masters, Womens and Youth classes. The morning got off to a slow start with the sailors being held at the beach due to light south winds.

In the afternoon however, Jervis Bay turned on the charm once again, bringing with it sunshine a sea breeze of 10-15 knots and the sailors were on the water by 2:30 for a sensational afternoon of racing.

The Hobie Womens and Youth Classes started first and took full advantage of the Jervis Bay afternoon nor'easter and stayed on the water for two races completing racing for the Hobie Womens and Hobie Youth classes for the day.

Hobie Youth Class

Series leaders Daniel Bjornholt and Felix Grech from Denmark came from behind out of the start line securing the lead at the weather mark and taking it all the way home in race 3. Second place went to Australians, Paul Darmanin and Lucy Copeland from New South Wales, who were followed by New Caledonians Thomas Enguerrand and Thomas Cyriaque for a place in the top 3.

It was double trouble in race 4 with the series leaders brother, Nicolaj Bjornholt from Denmark skippering to victory while crew, Trine Bentzen took care of the steering. The pair were fast off the line and lead wire to wire followed by West Australians, Guy Birchall and Tayla Woodhead. Daniel Bjornholt and Felix Grech overall series leaders came in to take out third.

Hobie Womens Class

The Australians took the top three spots in race 3 with Pip Pietromonaco and Josie Mark from Victoria having the lead all the way to the last downwind leg when they were passed by Bella Zanesco and Jesse Dobie from New South Wales to win, Pietromonaco managed to hold on to second while Victorians, Michelle Bursa and Chelsea Haynes took out third in what would be a repeat of the same names across the first three races of the series.

Michelle Bursa and Chelsea Haynes inspired by their third place in race 3 went on to take victory in race 4 smashing it straight out of the gate all the way to the line. Second place went to Germans, Kerstin Wichardt and Sarah Schütte while third place was taken by the Australians Pip Pietromonaco and and Josie Mark from Victoria.

The Hobie Grand Masters got to take the afternoon off and will return to the race venue bright and early tomorrow morning to complete their series.

Under cloudy skies and varied conditions the first day of the Hobie Grand Masters, Hobie Women’s and Hobie Youth series' got under way in what turned into a fantastic day for catamaran sailing.

Hobie® Women and Youth Classes

The Hobie Youth and Hobie Women’s classes were first out on the race course to start these championships which in turn saw the Hobie Grandmasters class sail in the afternoon. With four sets of sails for the event boats during the championships, the Women’s class had the hot coloured sails in red and yellow leaving the cool green and blue for the youth.

The Hobie Youth class was first to start followed by the Women class in the start sequence, both sailing on the same 1GO course with the windward mark set at 0.8 nautical miles from the start boat. The winds started out at 6-8 knots however after a major wind shift, the race committee decided to abandon the race, re-set the course and restart the race. When the winds settled it gave sailors perfect sailing conditions with the wind filling in with a 10-15 knots breeze from the SSE direction.

In race one the Hobie Youth class were away in an all clear start with Guy Birchall and Tayla Woodhead from Australia taking the lead to the first weather mark only to be passes on the way down to the gates by Daniel Bjornholt and Felix Grech from Sweden. Daniel Bjornholt and Felix Grech from Sweden held onto the lead until the finish with Australians, Guy Birchall and Tayla Woodhead taking second and Paul Darmanin and Lucy Copeland also from Australia coming in third.

Race number one in the Hobie Women’s class saw the Australian women doing well with Michelle Bursa and Chelsea Haynes getting a good start coming out in the lead however were caught by fellow Australians Bella Zanesco and Jesse Dobie who went on to victory with Pip Pietromonaco and Josie Mark coming in third.

Race number two for the Hobie youth saw Daniel Bjornholt and Felix Grech from Denmark lead wire to wire to take first place followed by Thomas Dupont and Lauren Hautier from New Caledonia with Australians Paul Darmanin Lucy Copeland taking out third.

The Australian women came through with the goods again in race number two with Michelle Bursa and Chelsea Haynes in the lead straight out of the gates and holding on to the finish with Pip Pietromonaco and Josie Mark pulling off second and Bella Zanesco and Jesse Dobie taking up third.

Hobie® Grand Masters Class

On completion of the first two races of the Women’s and Youth the boats were returned to the beach for the Grand Masters skippers and crews to prepare and sail out to the race course.

Race one of the Hobie Grand Masters was set to a 1GO course with the windward mark set at 1.0 nautical mile from the start boat which saw winds of 16-18 knots at 115º which made perfect sailing conditions.

Yui Shing Tong and Wai Sing Bendy Lee from Hong Kong were first to the A mark but Australians Rod and Kerry Waterhouse took the lead on the first downwind leg and carried on to take first followed by Blaine Dodds and Thorin Zeilmaker from South Africa taking out second and Anthony Duchatel and Evelyn Curtis (Australia) taking out third.

In race number two, past Hobie champions took first second and third. Australians Kerli Corlett and Ali Corlett lead wire to wire for the win followed by fellow Australians Rod and Kerry Waterhouse in second with South Africans Blaine Dodds and Thorin Zeilmaker picking up third.

Racing continues this morning with boat allocations at 8:30 for a 10:00 start.
